Landscape heterogeneity drives spatial distribution of palm community in a Neotropical rainforest reserve affected by defaunation

چکیده

Background: Our study presents the first assessment of relationships between environmental heterogeneity and palm community at landscape scale northern boundary tropical rainforest distribution in America.
Question: How does landscape-level (edaphic, topographic as well density, diversity, tree biomass) shapes a protected reserve affected by defaunation?
Study site date: The was carried out Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Station, Veracruz, Mexico (2020).
Methods: We delineated units (LUs) based on soil geomorphology to characterize biophysical mosaic. built rank-abundance curves compare richness their abundance among LUs. Permutational multivariate analysis variance (PERMANOVA) nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) were applied detect shifts across LUs.
Results: Integrating abiotic biotic components delimiting LUs allowed us evaluate multifactorial effect community. density composition palms changed significantly LUs, influenced coarse fragments, elevation, slope inclination, annual precipitation. Tree had significant only when analyzed combination with soil-topography variables.
Conclusions: results reveal that there is high edaphic influences species scale. approach allows capturing novel variation explain patterns coexistence highly diverse communities.

Rainforest metropolis casts 1,000-km defaunation shadow.

Tropical rainforest regions are urbanizing rapidly, yet the role of emerging metropolises in driving wildlife overharvesting in forests and inland waters is unknown. We present evidence of a large defaunation shadow around a rainforest metropolis. Using interviews with 392 rural fishers, we show that fishing has severely depleted a large-bodied keystone fish species, tambaqui (Colossoma macropo...

Defaunation leads to microevolutionary changes in a tropical palm

Many large species have declined worldwide due to habitat fragmentation and poaching. The defaunation of large frugivores and the consequent reductions of seed dispersal services may have immediate effects on plant demography. Yet, the lasting effects of frugivore defaunation on microevolutionary processes of the plants they disperse remain understudied. We tested if the loss of large seed disp...

Temporal and Spatial Variation of Soil Bacteria Richness, Composition, and Function in a Neotropical Rainforest

The high diversity of tree species has traditionally been considered an important controller of belowground processes in tropical rainforests. However, soil water availability and resources are also primary regulators of soil bacteria in many ecosystems. Separating the effects of these biotic and abiotic factors in the tropics is challenging because of their high spatial and temporal heterogene...

Consequences of frugivore-mediated seed dispersal for the spatial and genetic structures of a neotropical palm.

The idiosyncratic behaviours of seed dispersers are important contributors to plant spatial associations and genetic structures. In this study, we used a combination of field, molecular and spatial studies to examine the connections between seed dispersal and the spatial and genetic structures of a dominant neotropical palm Attalea phalerata. Field observation and genetic parentage analysis bot...

Fossil Araceae from a Paleocene neotropical rainforest in Colombia.

Both the fossil record and molecular data support a long evolutionary history for the Araceae. Although the family is diverse in tropical America today, most araceous fossils, however, have been recorded from middle and high latitudes. Here, we report fossil leaves of Araceae from the middle-late Paleocene of northern Colombia, and review fossil araceous pollen grains from the same interval. Tw...
